Kapit, a town in the interior of Sarawak is accessible by express boat from Sibu. Travelling at high speed, the boat reaches Kapit in about 2 1/2 hours. It is basically a timber town and the local economy is dependent on timber related economic activities.

The population consists of Ibans, Chinese (mainly Fuzhou and Hockien) and a sprinkling of Malays and other indigenous people.
