approx. 600,000 years - that is the estimated age of the "Heidelberg Man" whose jaw-bone was discovered in 1907 at nearby Mauer, the earliest evidence of human life in Europe.
Heidelberg is home to one of Europe's oldest educational institutes, the University of Heidelberg. Among the prominent thinkers to have been associated with the University over the centuries are Hegel, the philosopher of hermeneutics Hans-Georg Gadamer, the critical theorist Jürgen Habermas, and the discourse philosopher Karl-Otto Apel. Heidelberg's most momentous student was Karl Drais who invented the bicycle in 1817.(It is said that in the Second World War, Heidelberg escaped bombing as one of the U.S.Commander was graduated from the University of Heidelberg).
When i stroll through Philosophenweg and breathe in history, really enjoy the atmosphere there.
