"Pietà" by Michelangelo, 1499 Marble, height 174 cm, width at the base 195 cm Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican. This is considered by some to be one of Michelangelo's greatest works of art, completed when he was 22 years old in A.D. 1500. Interestingly, it is the only work signed by Michelangelo (on a diagonal ribbon carved across Mary's breast) possibly indicating his satisfaction with his work.
