For years an outpost of the Russian empire, the very shape and style of Helsinki's city center (greater Helsinki counts +/- 1 million people) was originally modelled on its powerful neighbour's former capital, St.Petersburg. Throughout the 20th century, the city became a showcase for art nouveau / art deco and modernist architects.
