For years an outpost of the Russian empire, the very shape and style of Helsinki's city center (greater Helsinki counts +/- 1 million people) was originally modelled on its powerful neighbour's former capital, St.Petersburg. Throughout the 20th century, the city became a showcase for art nouveau / art deco and modernist architects. The city is hemmed in on 3 sides by water and all the things you might want to see are within walking distance of one another. Its a truly surprising city deserving some of your attention.
