While in Bologna, Italy, in 2005 for a conference, I took an afternoon trip to nearby Ravenna, which in the 5th century was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire. The city includes a number of churches and other buildings that feature Byzantine mosaics, some 1600 years old. Seeing these was the focus of my visit.
