In the basilica I took the steps up to the cupola for views of the Vatican and Rome, I toured the basilica itself, and I visited the crypts below, paying my respects at the grave of Pope John Paul II.
The Vatican Museums feature a massive collection of paintings, frescoes, sculptures, sarcophagi, Egyptian artifacts and other pieces. All routes through the museum lead through the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo's famous frescoes there.
Between long lines at the Vatican and the sheer magnitude of the Museum collections, I strongly recommend allocating two days for your Vatican visit - and more if you are a true student of art.
The museums are closed most Sundays. Check the dress code before your visit.
