Santuario della Scala Santa features this staircase, 28 marble steps protected by a wood covering. Tradition holds that the marble steps are those from the palace of Pontius Pilate, moved to Rome by St. Helen, the mother of Constantine. If so, then Jesus walked up and down the steps the day of his trial before Pilate. Pilgrims ascend the stairs on their knees, praying with each step.
