Durban as a city is undergoing a renaisance. Growth is at record levels, investment is pouring in, and the citizens are becoming more passionate than ever about our subtropical gem.

The beachfront has always been one of the cities main drawcards, however during the 1980's and 90's it became tired, rundown and dangerous. People flocked to the coastal resorts to the north and the south of city, and the beachfront worsened. However, with the booming property sector in South Africa, beachfront apartments became diserable once more.

The primary drivers of this regeneration are the "bookends" of the Suncoast Casino at the northern end, and the recently opened uShaka Marine world to the south. That itself has lead to a massive redevelopment of the Point, and at present (March 2006) over R1 billion ($200m) worth of residential/hotel/commercial development is underway.

The council has focused on fixing the errors of the past, cleaning up the neglect, and polishing the beachfront so that it once again becomes an asset that Durbanites and tourists alike can be proud of. As the pictures show, they are well on their way in achieving their goal, and people are back on the beaches. These pictures were taken on a monday morning, hence the small numbers of people. Enjoy
