"A popular misconception is that this event has birds racing against one another. Actually, a Bird race is a "fun Race" where teams of three birdwatchers compete against each other in sighting, identifying and recording as many different species of birds. No! [not the number of birds] and done within a the stipulated times and location. Well over 250 species different species have been recorded in the wild state in Frasers Hills. The winning team will be the one sighting and recording the most number of species. A Bird race is governed by a set of rules. Scrutineering and and judging are conducted by highly qualified and experienced personals." I have here some picture of the place and also that of the ceremony. It is meaningless to show groups after groups of birders participating. It is more or less a static game.
The contest attracted over 40 teams. From Singapore & Thailand. Far away from Hong Kong, UK and Canada. Then they were divided into categories of Seasoned Birders, Novice, First time novice and students.
Everyone should be well matched and stand a good chance. Over the years, they had also relaxed the rules. hearing the bird calls, could be accepted as having seen. The winner overall in 2005, sighted 68 species. The contest would start at 2.00 pm on Saturday afternoon and ended at 12.00 noon on Sunday. Competitors would have the whole night to spot nocturnal birds as well.
The area supervised were marked by the hill tops area of Frasers, bordered at the entry and exit points to the hill stations.
Students were coached into participating.
