Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve was born in unusual circumstances. In the mid-1980s, Sg. Buloh's once luxuriant mangroves had mostly been cleared for prawn farming. The site itself was on the verge of being demarcated for intensive agro-tech farming. As fate would have it, a group of avid bird-watchers from the then Malayan Nature Society (Singapore Branch) stumbled upon the site and was enthralled by the extraordinary diversity of birds there.
