The current Gothic vernacular building was designed by a French-born architect in 1923. The first block was completed in 1927 & extended in 1940. They were able to obtain an exemption to the post-war WWII building ban in 1951 to erect more extensions. The end result is a 500 foot edifice erected over a 30 year period, 3 times larger than the original design but true to its inspiration.
