On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes, flying three of them into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Passengers and crew aboard the fourth plane, United Flight 93, sacrificed their lives when they thwarted hijacker plans to strike their last target, generally believed to be the U.S. Capitol. Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board.
