<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> BIRCH MEMORIAL CLOCK TOWER<br> Buildings in Perak picture - on Jalan Dewan (Post Office Rd) behind the Town Hall building, was unveiled in 1909. J.W.W. Birch, who was appointed as Perak&#39;s First British Resident, was an unpopular character. He was arrogant and showed no sensitivity towards local customs, religion and nuances. He did not think much of the Malays &#38; the feeling was mutual, especially the Royalty. It wasn&#39;t a surprise when Birch was eventually assassinated by Malays led by a chieftain called Dato&#39; Sago. It may be mere coincidence or downright contemptuous, but the memorial is strategically located directly opposite a mosque. Although still scorned by the Malays, the British made him a hero. </div></nolayer></noembed>
