Lotta's Fountain was a gift to the people of San Francisco from Lotta Crabtree, the most famous performer of her time. She made a fortune from nuggets of gold tossed onto the stage during her performances for miners in the nearby gold country. She donated this fountain in 1875, and it is now the oldest surviving monument in the city. San Franciscans hold an observance here at the fountain every April 18 to mark the occasion.
