Overall, the word "great person" is such a relative term. However, what really makes scientists "great" too is that their works & contributions to humanity ultimately leads to progress or saves millions of lives thereby making man's life throughout the ages A LOT better! Also, their contributions trascends time. Meaning, their works not only benifitted mankind during their time (when they were still alive) but also, it continously benefits mankind to this very day & for generations to come. Without science & these "great" individuals who propagate it, mankind will still be in the Dark Ages not having medicines to cure diseases, not having electricity which makes our lives a lot better, not having the means to forecast weather (e.g. storms, cyclones, & etc.) which saves lives, not having fertilizers & other means of improving agriculture which sustains our current massive world population, & etc.
