A view of the Colorado River which is primarily responsible for carving out the canyon. The canyon consists of limestone, sandstone, shale, and schist. The first three comprise the upper canyon layers, and are soft stone. As the river erodes deeper, the resulting canyon sides are eroded by rainwater.
