Spruce Tree House, two ancient kivas
Scenery in United States picture - Even today, kivas are sacred places where ceremonial rituals are performed by Puebloan indians. The kiva, normally circular and below ground level, is accessed from above by ladder. There is a central fire pit, and a side vent for fresh air to be drawn in. This is a three-story pueblo. Note the characteristic door cut-outs; wider at the top than the bottom. The reason for this is unclear even to the park rangers.
