Oasis Valley of Todra Gorge
Africa picture - The first time I visited one of Morocco's oases gorges I was amazed to fine such verdant valley floor gardens where the local Berber community grow their crops that are carried, often by donkey, to sell at the local souk. Across the valley are abandoned pise houses that are slowly crumbling back into the earth from which they were made. The flash floods in Morocco cause so much devistation and, in the past few years, the rains seem to be heavier and fall outside of what was the rainy season. In May 2006 the desert village of Merzouga experienced a flash flood in which people died, livestock was washed away and houses were reduced to ruins.
