I have traveled in Morocco for many years and my personal experience is one of a country that offers unparalleled diversity, a people that are naturally hospitable, warm and friendly and a culture that is rich, compelling and enduringly fascinating.
Traveling across Moroccos ever-changing landscape is an awesome experience. The Saharan Camel Caravans would take months, if not years, to cross Morocco; but now, in just one day, it's possible to drive over high mountain passes, through rose-filled valleys and passed one thousand kasbahs to watch the sun set over the slowly shifting sands of the Moroccan Sahara desert; not that I recommend you move with such haste when there is so much to see along the way.
For many, the desert is a special place and there are two desert regions in Morocco with easily accessible tall dune: The Erg Chebbi at Merzouga and the Erg Chigaga at M'hamid. Like many others who visit the desert, I never tire of walking in the sand dunes, listening to Gnawa musicians and sipping sweet mint tea as the world passes me by.
Camel trekking in the Sahara desert is, for many, the highlight of a Moroccan holiday - Camel Trek with a nomad guide across the sandy dunes as the sun sets across this incredible landscape or camel trek further and spend the night in a nomad tented desert camp; sleep in a nomad tent for the night. If your fantasy is to walk out of the world as you know it, and wander in the desert like a nomad, camel trek with a Berber guide for any number of days.
I have done two 5-day camel treks. I remember on one occasion, when we stopped for lunch by a well in a small oasis, looking across the shimmering black hammada to see hundreds of camels walking towards us. I watched for hours while liters of water were raised, bucket by bucket, and brown furry bellies visibly expanded to accommodate the vast amount of fluid needed to last until the next watering hole - it was one of those moments in life when time stops and the moment is all-encompassing.
These photographs of Morocco were taken over several years.
