Stratford-upon-Avon, located in Warwickshire, in the heart of England, owes its existence to an early wooden bridge which provided a crossing point of on the River Avon.

The crossing at Stratford lies on the old Salt Road to Alcester (the modern A422), the wooden bridge is long gone and was replaced by the stone Clopton Bridge in the end of the fifteenth centaury. Stratford lies on the river about 8 miles downstream from the county town of Warwick.
