was modeled on Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow. (Some say it also resembles the exterior of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.) It was built between 1973 & 1975 from materials native to Vietnam, especially marble from the Marble Mountain outside Danang. The Mausoleum is only open in the mornings and not every day. It closes for three months in the fall while the corpse is in Russia for maintenance. Visitors must sign in & then leave their possessions at another check point. They must dress modestly (no shorts, tank tops or short skirts) & behave devoutly. Talking is forbidden, so is putting your hands in your pockets. No bags, cameras or other portable items may be taken inside. Guards are there to make sure the rules are followed. There are usually long queues. You are not allowed to linger. You enter from one end of the room and leave from the other, continually moving. During the night the corpse is lowered deep into the ground into a cooler vault.
