The center opening was reserved for the use of the Emperor, and mandarins and students used the openings on either side. This complex was a combination temple/university. The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) is part temple, part university. Dedicated to Confucius &#38; widely considered to be the most important historic site in Hanoi, the temple was built in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong to honor scholars &#38; literary men. Six years later, in 1076, it became the site of the first university in Vietnam (and apparently in the world). </div></nolayer></noembed>
