Side view showing the sculpture garden
Sightseeing in Hanoi picture - Note that the colonnades, brackets, balustrades all have a Chinese look. The museum's two floors house thousands of artifacts, displayed chronologically. The Stone Age features polished stone tools and instruments for hunting and fighting, and the Bronze Age section is renowned for its bronze drums and weapons. An entire wing is devoted to 7th to 13th-century Champa stone carvings. There are also ceramics from the Ly and Tran dynasties, exhibits which focus on more modern Vietnamese culture such as thrones and altars from the Nguyen Dynasties, and elaborate dioramas depicting various Vietnamese victories over hostile invaders. Displays provide little explanatory text, even in Vietnamese, and English-language translation is lacking. Apparently, you have to rely on the English-language brochure you are given with the purchase of your entrance ticket for most of your information. English- speaking guides can be booked in advance.
