"Hanoi Opera House" (1911)
Sightseeing in Hanoi picture - in the French quarter SE of Hoan Kiem Lake. This incredible, Neo-Baroque building, built by the French in 1911, was modeled on Paris' famed Palais Garnier. (Apparently, the interior is equally stunning.) The Opera House was refurbished in the late 1990s at a whopping cost of US$20 million. The 900-seat opera house plays host to visiting foreign performances, as well as Vietnamese symphonies that play regularly. Historic note - It was here, on August 16, 1945, that the Viet Minh announced from the main balcony that they had taken over the city.
