This satellite photograph shows Crimea jutting down into the Black Sea from the north. Above Crimea you can see the Dnieper River cutting through Ukraine. That's the river that we have been cruising down from Kiev. Everything you see below the Black Sea is Turkey. Over to the right or east, that's Russia. In general terms, the Ukrainians living to the east of the Dnieper & down in Crimea speak and think Russian. To the west of the Dnieper, the people tend to speak Ukrainian and identify themselves more with western Europe. Part of Ukraine's problem today is this split personality: two languages and two allegiances.
