With so many busloads of visitors here to view the Swallows Nest, even from a distance, there were the inevitable stands set up with lots of Russian things to buy. The Crimean people here are mainly Russian speaking, and they voted overwhelmingly for the Russia-backed candidate for President just two years ago. When that candidate was announced the winner amid obvious voting fraud, the western side of Ukraine erupted with what is now known as the Orange Revolution. A national vote was taken again, and the Ukrainian candidate Victor Yushchenko was declared the winner, to the chagrin of the Crimean voters.
