More than 1,000 navvies died in the process of building the Canal/Waterway. Most were poor Irish immigrants who came looking for a better life, and some brought their family with them. Their sacrifices are commemorated in this Celtic Cross beside the first lock. An identical cross stands at the final lock in Kingston.
