preparing for Spring
Sightseeing in Ottawa picture - at Rideau Falls. The ice on the River can be 15" (0.4m) thick by the end of February, and military engineers used to blast it with dynamite to allow the Spring runoff to begin. A few years ago, the blasting shattered a valuable window in the nearby French Embassy, so now workers painstakingly saw huge chunks out of the ice instead, to help it break up less dramatically.
