the first eight locks
Sightseeing in Ottawa picture - looking toward the Ottawa River. Each is 134 ft (41m) long by 33 ft (10m) wide, and the available water depth is 5 ft (1.5m). Altogether they provide 79 ft (24m) of lift. It takes 1.5 hours to pass through from the Ottawa River to the Canal proper. The locks' original gates and operating mechanisms are still in use. The lockmaster's stone house is at the left foreground. The big stone structure at the top of the left hill is the rear of the East Block of Parliament.
