Argentina is probably the most European of South American countries. Buenos Aires could very well be one of the great cities of Europe with its wide boulevards, cafe culture and abundant nineteenth century heroic statuary. Bariloche in northern Patagonia, just across the border with Chile is simply a reproduction of a Swiss village, complete with chocolate, mountains and fondue. Argentineans know how to eat and drink well. The country rose to prosperity on the cows back, leather being one of Argentina's primary exports, while beef was almost viewed as a waste product. Now Argentinean asado (BBQ) is recognised as a cuisine in its own right. Nightlife in Argentina is sophisticated and excellent, with the bars only beginning to fill up after 11pm and nightclubs much later than that. Argentina also boasts unparallelled natural beauty, from the stark beauty of Patagonia in the south to the awesome Iguazu Falls in the north.
