The idea, originally conceived by The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram was that of an universal township. The community was founded in February 1968 to create a bridgehead for a new consciousness which was seeking to manifest in the world, according to the vision of Sri Aurobindo. It is also referred to as the City of Dawn. Matrimandir, or the "soul" of Auroville, which houses the urn that contains the earth of all nations, is under construction
