Gallipoli
Sightseeing in Plateau of Anatolia picture - The Anzac Cove monument. The monument and the road is about 5 metres above the beach up a steep slope. From here the Australian and New Zealand troops would have to make their way through the broken ground in the distance and climb over the ridge. The Turks did not expect anyone to invade here because the ground was so bad, but enough of a garrison was in place on the top of the ridge to stop the Australian advance. Fortunately for the Turks they were led by a fiercely independent and creative officer, Mustapha Kemal, later to become the saviour of his country and the first president of the Republic of Turkiye.
