Selcuk
Sightseeing in Plateau of Anatolia picture - The fortified gate of the Basilica of St John in Selcuk. During the 11th and 12th century as Byzantine power collapsed in Anatolia, the Byzantines abandoned the old city of Ephesus and moved to the hillsides overlooking the old town. To protect themselves from Turkmen raiders they tore down the remains of many old buildings and built a wall around the Basilica. It was ultimately in vain. The city was finally captured by the Turks in 1304.
