Some places retain an air of sacredness, regardless of changes in era and religion. In the foreground lie the sad remains of the Hellenic Temple of Artemis (Artemision), once one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was built sometime in the 5th century BC. Behind the Temple is the mosque of Isa Bey, built by the Seljuk Turks in the 14th century AD. behind and to the right you can see the few remaining columns of the Basilica of St John, a massive Christian basilica built by Justinian the Great in the 6th century AD. Over them all looms the Fortress, originally a Byzantine construction but rebuilt by the Ottoman Turks. </div></nolayer></noembed>
