Gallipoli
Sightseeing in Plateau of Anatolia picture - Not any old beach. ANZAC Cove where the Australian's came ashore in 1915 in Winston Churchill's ill-planned invasion of the Ottoman Empire. There is much debate about whether the British intended to invade via Anzac Cove or whether the landing barges were simply swept here by the current (which is very strong in the Dardanelles). Anzac Cove is one of the few sandy beaches that would have been a suitable landing site. The problem was the beach fronted a terrible, broken, gulley strewn ridge that was almost impossible to cross.
