The Mausoleum of Theodoric the Great (late 5th century). Theodoric was king of the Ostrogoths and in the mid 5th century was an ally (and potential threat) of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) empire. After the Goths under Oadvacer had seized Italy, the Emperor Zeno offered Theodoric the Kingdom of Italy if he could seize it from the Goths. Theodoric was successful and ruled from Ravenna as a Byzantine proxy.
