Although most people think that the Battle of Hastings happened at Hastings, it actually happened on that famous date in English history 1066 near the town of Battle, when the Normans defeated the Anglo-Saxons. King William (William the Conqueror) later built an Abbey to give thanks to his victory. It is said that the spot where King Harold fell, (an arrow through is eye), is marked by the high alter of the Abbey, and the battlefield became part of the Abbeys great park.
