Powis Castle sits on a rocky ridge with a steep south-eastern slope down to the formal gardens. Powis is one of the few Welsh castles which was not allowed to fall into decay and ruin. It was a military stronghold and has been continually occupied. Built of red gritstone parts of the castle date back earlier than 1277. The castle contains one of the finest collections of painting and furniture in Wales enriched by generations of Herberts and Clives. The castle contains treasures from India displayed in the Clive Museum.
