This is also known as the Plaza Grande even though it is quite small. General Antonio de Sucre, who defeated the Spanish in the Battle of Pichincha in 1822, is buried in the catherdral in the background. The cathedral itself was finished in 1562 though the portal and tower were only completed in the 20th century.
