On a recent trip to New Zealand we visited Bushy Park, a nature preserve near the North Island town of Wanganui. This preserve is open to day visitors and also offers lodging and meals. The main house dates to the early 1900's and was built as the opulent home of a wealthy bachelor. The surrounding grounds of about 250 acres exist in its original primeval state, having never been cleared or logged. This preserve is further enhanced by a predator-proof fence surrounding the entire property. After an extensive program of eradication of the exotic animals, such as stoats, weasels, ferretts, feral cats, possums, rabbits, rats, etc., the grounds are now suitable for reintroduction of native animals. There is currently a rearing program underway for kiwi birds. Other biology projects are also being conducted. We stayed at Bushy Park for two nights in September, 2006, in early Spring. Our hosts were Theo and Viv Perry. We enjoyed exploring the grand old house and walking the many nature trails.
