<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> Laura Secord (1775-1868)<br> Monuments &#38; Memorials in Ottawa picture - (No, she didn&#39;t invent chocolates -- she was Canada&#39;s first civilian intelligence agent). She was born in Massachusetts, but the family later became United Empire Loyalists. In 1813, having overheard American officers planning an imminent attack at Beaver Dams in the Niagara region, she slogged through bush, marsh and enemy lines for 18 hours to warn the British garrison. This led to the surprise and capture of nearly 500 American troops, and prevented a potential American takeover of the entire area. She was eventually rewarded for her heroism by the Prince of Wales. (Her chocolates came much later). </div></nolayer></noembed>
