Monuments & Memorials in Ottawa picture - Making a name for himself by brilliant planning, creative use of artillery throughout the war, and the capture of Vimy Ridge, he was the first Canadian promoted to the rank of General. King George V knighted him in 1917, and he received many other honours, including Commander of the Order of the Bath, Legion of Honour, Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, Croix de Guerre, and the US Distinguished Service Medal.
