He joined the Royal 22nd Regiment in 1916, and shortly thereafter won the Military Medal. At the Battle of Arras in 1918, he single-handedly repelled a massive German attack, after his comrades had been almost completely annihilated. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
