Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski, VC
Monuments & Memorials in Ottawa picture - He was mid-gunner in a Lancaster bomber that was hit and set afire over Cambrai, France. He died trying to free the tail gunner, while his own parachute and clothing were ablaze. Miraculously, the tail of the plane broke off on impact, and the tail gunner survived to tell of Mynarski's heroism. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
