<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> Lt Robert Hampton Gray VC, DSC<br> Monuments &#38; Memorials in Ottawa picture - In 1940, instead of entering McGill Medical School as he had originally planned, he joined the RCNVR, the famous &#34;wavy navy&#34;. He was loaned to the Royal Navy, where he became a pilot with the Fleet Air Arm. He flew Hurricanes and other aircraft in North Africa, and Corsairs in attacks on the German battleship Tirpitz. He later joined the British Pacific Fleet in 1945, and distinguished himself in attacks on Japan. In August 1945, just days after the atomic bombs had been dropped and just before Japan surrendered, he died sinking a Japanese destroyer. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and later the Victoria Cross. He was one of the last Canadians to die in combat in World War II. Here&#39;s a good account of his exploits: www.navalandmilitarymuseum.org/resource_pages/heroes/gray.html . </div></nolayer></noembed>
