(1622-1698) Appointed in 1672, he is the best known of New France's many governors. Under his leadership the Iroquois were defeated, Lasalle explored the Mississippi, d'Iberville captured most of Newfoundland, and a series of forts was built along the Great Lakes and the Mississippi. He is best remembered for his answer to Sir William Phipps of Boston, who attacked Quebec in 1690 and demanded that he surrender: "I will reply only through the mouths of my cannons".
