While the Khajuraho statues were easily accepted by the Hindu people a thousand years ago, this Thomas Hart Benton painting was severely criticized by many Americans when it was completed only 70 years ago. The painting was described as 'lewd, immoral, obscene, lascivious, degrading, an insult to womanhood and the lowest expression of pure filth." I wonder what that critic would have said about the statues of Khajurajo, one of UNESCO'S World Heritage sites. What a difference between our two cultures!
