on the east side of the National Mall, is actually the Institution Building. It is the oldest & most prominent building on the Mall & houses the Institution's administrative offices and high-tech information center. For many years, it housed all aspects of Smithsonian operations, including an exhibit hall from 1858 until the 1960s. Constructed of red sandstone in the Norman style (a 12th-century combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs), it was completed in 1855. The architect was James Renwick, Jr. whose other works include St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.
