Several reconstructions have taken place over the years, the first following a disastrous fire on January 24, 1865. The east wing was fireproofed and enlarged to accommodate more offices in 1884, & remodeling in 1968-69 restored the building to its Victorian roots. A bell, which now chimes hourly, was added in 1996 when the Smithsonian celebrated its 150th anniversary.
