The contemporary museum building itself, designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft, & often likened to a large spacecraft parked on the National Mall, is as much of an attraction as the contents. The circular reinforced concrete structure, 231 feet in diameter, sits on four massive piers, 14 feet above the ground, providing a plaza area for the display of sculpture.
